Our Frequently Asked Questions
All your questions
What is Kyuka Surfclub?
Kyuka Surfclub is more than just a surf camp in Fuerteventura — it’s a family-style surf retreat where surfing, movement, and community come together. We’re located on Fuerteventura’s north coast, between El Cotillo, Majanicho, and the Corralejo dunes — surrounded by volcanoes, beaches, and some of the island’s best surf spots.
Here, you don’t just learn to surf — you reconnect with nature, yourself, and others in an authentic, down-to-earth atmosphere that feels like home.
Are there fixed arrival days and when does the retreat week start?
Our retreat week runs from Saturday to Saturday, which is when most guests arrive. We start the week together with a welcome dinner and icebreaker games on Saturday evening.
However, if your flights work better on another day, that’s totally fine — we’re flexible. Arriving on Saturday just makes it easier to join the group rhythm from day one.
What is the average age of Kyuka guests?
Most guests are between twentyfive and thirtyfive years old, but that’s just an average. We’ve had eighteen-year-olds on their first solo trip and sixty-year-olds rediscovering their love for the ocean.
At Kyuka, age doesn’t matter — it’s your mindset that counts.
What is the girls/boys ration in surf camps?
Usually the ratio is around 60% women, 40% men. We’ve made the discovery, that there are a lot more female travelers that book solo trips.
Do most people come to Kyuka Surfclub alone?
Yes — and that’s exactly what makes Kyuka special. Around 80% of our guests come solo, looking for a mix of surfing, connection, and reset time. From the very first evening, our community meals, team-building games, and shared adventures make it easy to connect. Most people leave with lifelong friends — or at least great travel buddies for their next surf trip.
From which countries do your guests usually come?
We host a diverse mix of travelers, mostly from Central and Western Europe — Germany, France, Italy, Latvia, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, and the UK.
In recent months, more guests have joined from Scandinavia and the U.S.. The mix changes weekly, but everyone shares the same open mindset and love for the ocean.
Do I need a socket adapter in the villa?
If you’re coming from mainland Europe, you’re good — Fuerteventura uses the standard Type C and F plugs (the same as most EU countries).
If you’re coming from Switzerland, the UK, or the U.S., you’ll need a plug adapter.
Do you provide towels and bed sheets?
Yes — bed sheets and one shower towel per person are included. We recommend bringing your own beach or pool towel, as our towels are meant for indoor use only.
What makes Kyuka Surfclub different from other surf camps in Fuerteventura?
Kyuka Surfclub isn’t a mass surf camp. It’s a small, owner-run surf retreat where you’re treated like family, not a booking number.
Sascha and Timo, the founders, live on-site and host guests personally, creating a real connection and a home-away-from-home feeling. Their goal is to create a place where everyone feels welcome, can be themselves and finally open up to strangers to make new friends.
Kyuka combines quality surf coaching, healthy food, movement sessions, and genuine community, making it one of the most personal surf retreats in the Canary Islands.
What does “Kyuka” mean?
“Kyuka” (休暇) is Japanese for “holiday” or “taking a break.”
It reflects our philosophy perfectly — stepping out of your daily rhythm to recharge, reconnect, and live more freely.
Do I need to be fit to come to Kyuka?
Not at all. You don’t need to be an athlete to enjoy your week here.
If you have an injury or special condition, let us know in advance — we can always adapt surf lessons or suggest lighter activities like yoga, mobility, or hiking. Kyuka is open to all levels and all bodies.
Who runs Kyuka Surfclub?
Kyuka was founded and is run by brothers Sascha and Timo Imhof, who wanted to create a place where people can surf, grow, and connect.
They live on-site, surf with the guests, and make sure the energy of the week stays authentic and personal.
What is the spirit behind Kyuka?
Kyuka’s philosophy is about community, connection, and transformation.
You’ll find a mix of adventure and relaxation, of shared experiences and personal space. It’s where people come as strangers and leave as part of the family — whether you’re here for surfing, yoga, or just to reset your energy.
Do you separate rooms by gender?
Usually yes — we try to match room preferences based on gender when possible. If you’re coming as a couple or mixed group, we’ll make sure to arrange rooms accordingly. Let us know in advance if you have any preferences!
What language is spoken at Kyuka Surfclub?
Our main language is English, but our team also speaks German, Latvian, a little Finnish, and French.
You’ll always find someone to talk to — and it’s a great chance to pick up a few new surf-related words in other languages too.
Will I meet Timo and Sascha during my stay?
Most likely yes! Both brothers live on-site and are usually around every week.
If one of them is away, a member of the core team will host you and make sure you experience the same Kyuka spirit.
How do you organize surf course levels at Kyuka Surfclub?
At our surf camp in Fuerteventura, we organize surf levels during booking and check-in (you’ll receive a short form via email). We offer beginner surf camp lessons, intermediate coaching, and advanced video analysis for those wanting to refine maneuvers.
If you’re unsure about your level, send us a short video — our instructors will make sure you start in the perfect group. We also adapt your level during the week if we see you’re progressing faster or need more guidance.
Can I really learn to surf at Kyuka Surfclub?
Absolutely. Most of our guests are total beginners when they arrive, and by the end of the week they’re standing on waves confidently.
Our instructors teach at some of the best surf spots in Fuerteventura, focusing on safety, positioning, and wave reading. With the right mindset, you’ll improve quickly — this is one of the most beginner-friendly surf retreats in the Canary Islands.
Can I bring my own surf equipment?
Yes — feel free to bring your own surfboard, leash, or wetsuit. We have safe storage for boards at the villa.
If you’re bringing kite, wind, or wing foil gear, just let us know beforehand so we can plan space. Many guests who come for solo surf trips in Fuerteventura bring their own gear to mix lessons with free sessions.
What kind of surfboards can I rent at Kyuka?
We collaborate with our trusted partner surf school nearby, offering hundreds of surfboards — from soft tops for beginners to performance shortboards and longboards.
Tell us what kind of board you’re looking for, and we’ll prepare it for your arrival. Whether you’re here for a beginner surf camp week or advanced reef sessions, we’ll make sure your board fits your goals.
What wetsuits are available at Kyuka Surfclub?
You’ll get a comfortable, high-quality wetsuit in your size, no matter the season. In summer, you’ll likely surf in a 2/2 mm, while in winter a 3/2 mm is perfect.
Can I book private coaching or one-to-one surf lessons?
Yes! Besides group sessions, we offer private surf coaching in Fuerteventura to target your personal goals — whether that’s improving take-offs, reading waves, or learning maneuvers.
Just message us via WhatsApp or email, and we’ll schedule a private session with one of our coaches.
Where do the surf lessons take place?
Surf lessons take place mostly in the north of Fuerteventura, depending on tides and swell. We teach beginners on safe sandy beach breaks and bring advanced surfers to reef breaks when conditions are right.
Our goal: find the best spot every day for your level.
Do you teach at beach breaks or reef breaks?
Both. Beginners surf at beach breaks; intermediate and advanced surfers explore Fuerteventura’s famous north-shore reefs. We always choose the best and safest option for the day’s conditions.
What should I bring to the surf course?
Bring reef-safe sunscreen or zinc, a swimsuit, towel or surf poncho, water, and a snack. Chewing gum helps after salty sessions!
If you have allergies or a medical condition, let us know before class.
How long does a surf lesson last?
Each surf lesson lasts around four hours door-to-door, including pickup, warm-up, beach theory, and water time.
That gives you plenty of practice without feeling rushed — ideal for beginners learning at their own rhythm.
In which languages do you teach surfing?
Most surf lessons in Fuerteventura are taught in English, but our instructors also speak German, a little Spanish and French.
If you prefer a specific language, message us before your stay — we’ll try to make it work.
Is the transfer to the beach included in the price?
Yes. Beach transfers are included in all surf lessons — no need to worry about transport or tides. We pick you up directly at the villa.
When is the best time for beginner surf lessons in Fuerteventura?
All year! There’s always a beach with perfect beginner waves somewhere on the island.
Fuerteventura is known as a year-round surf paradise, making Kyuka one of the best beginner surf camps in the Canary Islands.
When is the best time for advanced surf lessons?
From September to April, when the winter swells hit the north shore and bring more powerful, consistent waves.
Still, you’ll find quality surf year-round — the island never sleeps.
When are the best waves in Fuerteventura?
If you really want head high, strong waves, the best waves arrive during the winter months (September–April), offering world-class surf for all levels (for beginners we go to places where the waves are small)..
In summer, the waves are smaller but perfect for beginners, intermediates or relaxed longboard sessions.
From what age can children join surf lessons?
Kids can join from around 8 years old, depending on swimming ability. They must be accompanied by a parent and follow the instructor’s safety guidance. Contact us first so we can confirm if the week is suitable for your child.
Can I use the surf equipment outside of lesson times?
Yes, if you rent equipment from our partner surf school.
If your lesson includes a board and you’d like to surf more, you can often extend your rental for a small extra fee — ideal for extra practice days or sunset sessions.
Can I go surfing on my own on non-lesson days?
Yes, if you rent a car that won’t be a problem. Some of our solo surf travelers in Fuerteventura explore nearby surf spots on free days.
Sometimes we organize spontaneous surf trips or beach days— feel free to join!
How much does equipment rental cost, and is a deposit required?
Rental prices vary depending on board type (soft top, epoxy, performance board). Generally expect around fifteen to twenty euros per day including the wetsuit and leash.
Please message us for current prices — rentals are handled with our surf school partner.
When do surf lessons start?
Surf lesson times depend on tides, wind, and swell. Most days, classes start around nine a.m. or one p.m..
If you’re working remotely, let us know in advance so we can help plan around your calls — we’re flexible.
Can I skip surf lessons or take breaks?
Of course. You don’t have to join every session, though booked lessons are non-refundable once the week begins.
If you want to surf fewer days, adjust before arrival — no problem.
Can I book extra surf lessons spontaneously?
Yes, depending on availability. We usually offer at least one surf lesson per weekday (excluding weekends). Just ask us on-site and we’ll organize it for you.
Do you rent roof racks for surfboards?
We don’t rent roof racks ourselves, but local car rentals in Fuerteventura often include them. We can point you to a provider that’s surfer-friendly i.e. Autoreisen with their Dacia Jogger.
Can I exchange a rented board for another one?
Usually yes — depending on availability at the surf school. If you feel like switching from a soft top to a hardboard mid-week, we’ll help you organize it.
What happens if my surfboard gets damaged?
If a rented or personal board gets damaged, you’ll pay the repair cost directly to the surf school.
If you have travel insurance that covers surf gear, you can request reimbursement afterward.
Do you use eco-friendly surf wax?
Yes — we prefer eco-friendly surf wax and encourage all guests to help us protect the ocean we love.

Classes focus on mobility, balance, and surf-specific recovery, making them ideal after long sessions in the water.
How often do you offer yoga at the surf camp?
We usually run two yoga sessions per week. They’re included in many retreat weeks, and additional sessions can be booked on site depending on the instructor’s availability.
Yoga is optional but highly recommended – it’s one of the reasons guests call Kyuka the best yoga surf camp in the Canary Islands.

Our therapists specialize in surf-related tension release so you can get back in the water feeling lighter and stronger.

We organize ice-bath and sauna sessions with our wellness partners nearby, such as 7Lemons House in Lajares.
Ask us before arrival – we’ll let you know which recovery options are available during your week at the surf retreat in Fuerteventura.
I have an injury – can I still join?
Usually yes. Let us know in advance so we can adapt the week for you.
You can always join mobility, yoga, or stretching sessions instead of surfing, or just enjoy the community vibe and island life until you recover. It’s always good for the mood and maybe also for recovery to be in the sun and get some vitamin D.
How much does a yoga session cost if booked extra?
Prices vary depending on the instructor and schedule, generally between fifteen and fifty Euros (from group to private).
Message us before your stay and we’ll confirm exact options for your week.

How safe is Lajares and Fuerteventura?
Extremely safe. Lajares is one of the calmest and friendliest towns in the Canary Islands.
It’s common to leave surfboards or bikes outside — still, we recommend the usual travel awareness, especially in tourist areas.

We almost never need cash anymore except for the car wash.

Everything is cooked with a focus on quality ingredients, taste, and performance nutrition.
Do I have to buy water?
We provide drinking water during meals and have refill stations in the ktichen area at the villa. Tap water in Fuerteventura is desalinated and not ideal for drinking, so we use filtered or bottled options.

Since meals are included, the kitchen isn’t meant for self-catering.
If you have medical dietary needs or special routines, let us know — we’ll find a solution.

It’s food made for surfers, travelers, and dreamers – healthy, colorful, and always from the heart. ❤️

If you prefer to rest, there are hammocks, the pool, and sunny terraces waiting for you at the villa.
Will I have time for myself?
Definitely. Even though Kyuka has a strong community vibe, we understand the need for space.
You’ll always find quiet corners for journaling, stretching, or reading.
Many solo travelers say this mix of freedom and connection is what made their surf camp Fuerteventura experience so special.
How does arrival work when I land at Fuerteventura Airport?
We make it simple — airport pickup is included in your stay.
Before you arrive, we’ll coordinate your flight details and send you the pickup point and driver contact.
Sometimes guests landing around the same time share the same shuttle, so there might be a short wait — but it’s the perfect moment to meet your first surf buddies of the week.
How far is Kyuka Surfclub from the airport?
Our surf villa in Lajares is around 30 minutes by car from Fuerteventura Airport (FUE).
The drive already sets the tone — volcanic desert, blue sky, and ocean views on the horizon.
Is the airport transfer really included?
Yes — all stays over 4 nights booked through our website include free airport transfer (both arrival and departure).
If you’re joining as part of a special group or retreat, just double-check your booking confirmation to make sure it’s listed there.
How much luggage can I bring?
As much as your airline allows.
If you’re bringing surfboards or multiple suitcases, please let us know in advance so we can plan space in the shuttle.
Many airlines flying to the Canary Islands surf destinations offer affordable sports luggage options – it’s worth checking before you fly.
Do you also pick up at night?
Yes, we organize transfers even for late-night arrivals.
If your flight is very late, we’ll come to get you and make sure you can check in smoothly – no stress, even after midnight.

Just type “Kyuka Surfclub” or “Calle Mazo 13, Lajares” into Google Maps.
We’ll also send you the pin and driving directions before arrival.
The roads are easy, and parking is free at the villa.
Should I rent a car during my stay?
It depends on what kind of week you want. If you plan to free surf, explore hidden beaches, or do sunset trips, a rental car is great.
If you’re focused on surf lessons and group activities, you won’t need one — our shuttle covers the essentials.
That’s why many guests doing a solo surf trip in Fuerteventura skip the car completely.
Which car rental do you recommend?
We recommend local rental providers like Autoreisen — fair pricing, easy pickup at the airport, and clear insurance terms (their 2 €/day insurance is usually cheaper than others).
Book in advance during high season — surf travelers love this island!
Is there public transportation?
Yes, there are buses between major towns like Corralejo, La Oliva, and Puerto del Rosario.
However, they don’t reach the surf beaches directly and often run only a few times per day.
If you’re here for surfing, rental cars or surf school transfers are far more practical.
How much does a taxi cost from the airport to Lajares?
A private taxi from the airport to our surf retreat in Lajares costs around 50–70 €, depending on time of day.
Since airport pickup is included, you’ll only need a taxi if you’re doing your own transfer or exploring outside the weekly plan.
Do you offer transfers for custom activities or day trips?
Yes — if you book an excursion, hike, or diving trip through us, we’ll help organize transport.
Fuerteventura is spread out, so shared rides or small group shuttles are often the easiest way to get around.

Do you have any booking tips?
Book early for high season:
The busiest months are October to April (for surf season) and July–August (for summer holidays).
Our surf villa has limited spots, so we recommend booking at least 4–8 weeks in advance — especially if you want a private room.
Flights are often cheaper midweek:
Check flights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays — airlines like Ryanair, easyJet, Swiss, Iberia, and TUI often offer lower fares midweek.
Solo travelers are welcome year-round:
Around 80% of guests come alone, so any week works perfectly if you’re planning a solo surf trip to Fuerteventura.
Flexible arrival days:
Our surf retreat runs from Saturday to Saturday, but you can also arrive on other days if your flights demand it — we’ll adjust airport pickup accordingly.
Low-season perks:
May, June, and September are slightly quieter but still warm, with great beginner waves and smaller groups — a hidden gem for travelers who prefer more space and calm energy.
These simple tips will help you find the best value, vibe, and waves for your surf and yoga retreat in the Canary Islands.

Who is Buddy?
Buddy is our little Italian Greyhound and the true heart of Kyuka Surfclub.
She’s small, social, and completely convinced she runs the villa (we just pay rent 😄).
You’ll usually find her sunbathing by the pool, greeting guests (if you give her some time and space), or watching surf lessons from the beach.
Can I pet Buddy?
Yes, please do! She loves gentle attention and meeting new people.
Just remember to let her approach you first — she’s curious but a little scared at times.
Does Buddy bite?
No — Buddy is friendly and has never bitten anyone.
She’s used to groups, laughter, and surfboards everywhere, so she’s very calm around guests.
Can I feed her?
We kindly ask you not to feed Buddy, even if she gives you those famous puppy eyes.
She’s on a special diet, and too many snacks can upset her tiny stomach.
Also to avoid confusion – she’s supposed to look like this. She is actually on the upper part of the BMI for an Italian greyhound and we need to make sure she’s not snacking too much.
I’m allergic to dogs — can I still visit?
Yes. Buddy mostly stays outdoors or in the living areas, not in guest rooms.
If you have a severe allergy, please let us know before booking so we can prepare your room accordingly.
I’m afraid of dogs — will that be a problem?
Not at all. Buddy is small, quiet, and easy to avoid if you prefer.
We’ll make sure she gives you space — though most guests end up falling in love with her by day two.
Will Buddy come into my room?
No, she’s not allowed inside guest bedrooms. Please make sure to close the doors at all times or you might find some little paw prints on the white linen.
She loves company but also knows her boundaries.
Why is she called Buddy?
Because that’s exactly what she is — everyone’s little buddy.
She’s been part of Kyuka since the beginning, spreading smiles and cuddles to guests from all over the world. Also, the name was there before the dog, so the gender didn’t matter.
Can Buddy surf?
She tries… usually by stealing the best sun spot on the board 😄
No but seriously she hates water, if she can, she will avoid it at all cost. If she barks at the pool she’s afraid of you drowning.
